The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to the courageous and determined students of Panjab University, Chandigarh, for securing a significant victory in their democratic struggle. This triumph marks a powerful moment in student activism, one that reaffirms the strength of collective voice and peaceful resistance.
Over the past weeks, Panjab University witnessed intense student-led protests after the Centre introduced a controversial restructuring move that threatened the university’s historic autonomy and democratic functioning. Between October 30 and November 7, the Centre issued four consecutive notifications that triggered widespread outrage across Punjab. Students, alumni, educators, and political leaders united against this abrupt restructuring plan, leading to a massive political backlash and sustained demonstrations in Chandigarh and beyond.
Recognizing the students’ rightful demand, the Centre has now withdrawn the contentious restructuring move. More importantly, a key demand of the protesting students has been accepted: the long-awaited Senate elections will now proceed as per the approved schedule. On November 9, the Vice President of India and Panjab University Chancellor, Shri CP Radhakrishnan, formally approved the Senate poll schedule, and the decision was conveyed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig on Thursday evening.
NAPA applauds the steadfast commitment of the students who stood firm to protect the democratic traditions of Panjab University. Their resilience has ensured that the institution’s Senate—one of the oldest democratic academic bodies in the country—remains intact, transparent, and accountable.
This victory is not just of the students but of every individual who believes in educational freedom, institutional autonomy, and democratic rights. NAPA stands in solidarity with the youth of Punjab and remains committed to supporting their pursuit of justice, dignity, and democratic empowerment.
