The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemns the alarming actions of the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, which has been exposed for deploying intelligence agents to threaten and intimidate journalist Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu of Rozana Lok Naad TV and his family. This shocking revelation, captured on video, lays bare the authoritarian and anti-democratic nature of the current Punjab government.
A video circulating widely on social media clearly shows how the Bhagwant Mann government is using the intelligence apparatus of the state to silence honest journalism. Journalist Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu, known for his fearless and truthful reporting, has been subjected to threats not only personally but his family members have also been targeted — a cowardly and shameful tactic used by regimes that fear accountability.
Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of NAPA, stated: “This frustrated, failed, and deeply non-democratic regime has now turned its guns against all independent journalists who dare to speak the truth. The AAP government, which came to power on promises of transparency and good governance, has proven itself to be nothing more than a dictatorial force suppressing the free press of Punjab. NAPA will NEVER allow this dictatorial government to muzzle the voice of Punjab’s journalists and people.”
NAPA calls upon: The Government of India and the Supreme Court to take immediate cognizance of this gross violation of press freedom in Punjab; national and international press freedom organizations to document and condemn these attacks on journalism; the Bhagwant Mann government to immediately stop all threats and harassment against journalist Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu and his family; and full accountability and legal action against intelligence officials involved in threatening journalists.
NAPA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the Freedom of the Press. We stand in full solidarity with journalist Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu and all independent journalists of Punjab. We pledge to fight at every platform legal, political, and public , to protect the democratic rights of the people of Punjab and ensure that no journalist is silenced by any government.
Freedom of Press is Non-Negotiable. NAPA Stands Guard.
