An Edmonton resident has been formally charged in connection with an alleged vehicle fraud scheme involving tampered odometers and misleading documentation, according to police officials. The accused, 39-year-old Harmandeep Singh Bindra, is facing charges of fraud and uttering forged documents following an investigation that commenced in March 2026.
Authorities allege that over the past year, beginning around March 2025, the accused had been purchasing used vehicles—primarily high-mileage models such as Nissan Altimas, Honda Accords, and Honda CRVs—through Facebook Marketplace. After acquiring these vehicles, investigators claim that the odometers were manipulated to significantly reduce the recorded mileage, in some cases by hundreds of thousands of kilometres.
Police further state that the vehicles were then resold at inflated prices through online listings created under fake identities. To make the sales appear legitimate, the accused is alleged to have provided prospective buyers with falsified CARFAX reports, giving the impression that the vehicles had far lower mileage and a cleaner history than was actually the case.
Investigators have identified multiple aliases allegedly used in the scheme, including Hary Smith, Harry Singh, Harmandeep Singh, and Gurdev. These identities were reportedly used to communicate with buyers and conduct transactions, making it more difficult for victims to trace the seller’s true identity.
The Edmonton Police Service believes there may be additional victims who unknowingly purchased altered vehicles. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are urging anyone who may have bought a used vehicle under suspicious circumstances or dealt with the accused to come forward.
The case highlights growing concerns around online vehicle marketplaces, where fraudulent practices such as odometer tampering and document forgery can leave buyers vulnerable. Police are advising consumers to exercise caution, independently verify vehicle histories, and seek professional inspections before completing any purchase.
