Punjab Anganwadi Union president Hargobind Kaur joins SAD, Sukhbir Badal appoints her Chief of Istri Akali Dal

Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today received a shot in the arm with All-Punjab Anganwadi Workers Union President Hargobind Kaur joining the party along with her supporters in the presence of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Several thousand Anganwadi workers congregated at the SAD headquarter here along with Ms Hargobind Kaur and expressed faith in the Shiromani Akali Dal. Party president Sukhbir Singh Badal also announced the appointment of Ms Hargobind Kaur as president of the Istri Akali Dal.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Hargobind Kaur said she had been working as president of the Punjab Anganwadi Union for the last 27 years and that of the national unit since the last sixteen years. “We have worked assiduously to give due respect to anganwadi workers in society besides fighting for the just causes of our workers”.

She detailed how she had always been given due respect and honour by former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal who had always viewed the demands of Anganwadi workers sympathetically. “Today I have been given the responsibility of heading the Istri Akali Dal which is an honour for me. I will work to the best of my ability to become the voice of the women of the State”.

Welcoming Ms Hargobind Kaur into the SAD, Mr Sukhbir Badal said “I have known Hargobind ji for years. I have been impressed by her ability to secure justice for Anganwadi workers as well as work for social upliftment of women”.

He said the SAD was the voice of Punjab and he was confident that Ms Hargobind Kaur would take the party to the people with even more renewed vigour. He also spoke on how former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had always worked for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden. “The SAD is committed to follow this ideal”.

Senior leader N K Sharma while speaking on the occasion, said Ms Hargobind belonged to an ordinary jat Sikh family and had made a mark in society through dint of her hard work and dedication.

He also disclosed how the Anganwadi head also ran an NGO which was working for the welfare of women and children. Other leaders present on the occasion included Parkash Singh Bhatti, Ranjit Singh Gill, Tejinder Singh Middukhera and Charanjit Singh Brar.
