Relief for Consumers: Subsidized Tomatoes Now Priced at Rs 70/kg Starting Today

New Delhi : In a welcome development for consumers, the government has taken significant steps to alleviate the financial strain on the common man. The prices of subsidized tomatoes have been further reduced, and citizens can now purchase tomatoes at an affordable rate of Rs 70 per kg. This price reduction comes into effect from July 20, 2023, and aims to provide relief to households grappling with inflation.

The cooperative agencies, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) and National Consumer Cooperative Federation of India Limited (NCCF), are actively involved in the sale of these subsidized tomatoes on behalf of the central government. The initiative was launched last week, enabling consumers to access tomatoes at subsidized rates, bringing some respite to their budgets.

In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, it was stated, “Considering the recent decline in tomato prices, the Ministry has directed NCCF and NAFED to retail tomatoes at Rs 70 per kg starting July 20, 2023.”

Earlier, NAFED and NCCF had acquired tomatoes and offered them at Rs 90 per kg. However, in response to the market dynamics and to further support consumers, the price was subsequently reduced to Rs 80 per kg on July 16, 2023. By implementing this additional price reduction, the government aims to ensure that consumers benefit even more from the subsidized rates, effectively addressing the challenges posed by inflatio
