Jalandhar/Chandigarh-– The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal, expresses profound concern regarding the escalating law and order situation in Punjab, India. The recent surge in violent incidents has instilled fear among the Punjabi diaspora, deterring many from visiting their homeland.
He said that in the past year, Punjab has witnessed a significant increase in violent crimes, including targeted attacks on prominent figures. The Punjabi diaspora is alarmed by these developments, feeling increasingly apprehensive about traveling to Punjab amidst such instability. The fear of potential violence has led to a decline in visits, impacting cultural and familial ties.
While expressing satisfaction about the number of road accidents Chahal said in 2024, Punjab experienced a significant reduction in road accident fatalities, with a 48% decrease following the deployment of the Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF). The SSF, operational since January 27, 2024, responded to road incidents within 6 to 8 minutes, contributing to the saving of approximately 1,000 lives.
Moreover, despite official claims of declining crime rates, Media reports suggest a 5% increase in registered criminal cases in Punjab. This discrepancy has raised questions about the accuracy of official statistics and the effectiveness of law enforcement strategies.
NAPA urges the Punjab government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate and effective measures to restore safety and security in the region. It is imperative to address the concerns of the Punjabi diaspora and ensure that Punjab remains a safe destination for all.
NAPA remains committed to advocating for the rights and safety of Punjabis worldwide and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
