The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), through its Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal, has formally expressed serious concern to the Honorable Chief Minister of Punjab, Pakistan, Ms. Maryam Nawaz Sharif, regarding the arrest of two Sikh brothers by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). Badal Singh (30) and his brother Suraj Singh, residents of Chak No. 91 NB, District Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan, have reportedly been labeled as “very dangerous terrorists” by the CTD—a characterization that has alarmed the global Sikh community and raised significant questions about the treatment of religious minorities in the region. In his official correspondence with the Chief Minister, Mr. Chahal has respectfully appealed for an urgent and impartial review of the case, emphasizing the need for transparent and fair justice.
“We respectfully urge Your Excellency’s government to ensure this case is handled with the highest standards of fairness, transparency, and complete respect for human rights,” stated Mr. Chahal. “The Sikh community worldwide is deeply concerned and closely monitoring these developments. Any perception of injustice would not only affect these two individuals but could potentially damage the interfaith harmony and trust that your administration has worked to foster.”
NAPA has specifically called for:
- A neutral and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrests
- Immediate safeguarding of the legal and constitutional rights of Badal Singh and Suraj Singh
- Elimination of any practices that may disproportionately target religious minorities
This case has generated significant concern among Sikh organizations and human rights advocates globally. NAPA has indicated it will seek support from international human rights bodies if a satisfactory resolution is not achieved promptly. The Sikh heritage is deeply rooted in the sacred soil of Punjab, Pakistan, a connection that Sikhs worldwide hold with profound reverence. Incidents of this nature risk weakening those historic bonds,” added Mr. Chahal. “We are confident that under your distinguished leadership, justice will not only be served but manifestly seen to be served. “NAPA continues to monitor the situation vigilantly and respectfully urges Pakistani authorities to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and religious freedom as guaranteed under Pakistan’s constitution.
