DSGMC constitutes 11 member Committee of Sikh intellectuals to discuss UCC

New Delhi: Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) led by President Harmeet Singh Kalka and General Secretary Jagdip Singh Kahlon called a meeting of Sikh intellectuals from across the country to deliberate upon Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the meeting unanimously decided to form 11 member panel to prepare draft of demands and objections of Sikh community about UCC.

Addressing media after the meeting which was held at conference call DSGMC office at Gurdwara Rakabganj complex here, Harmeet Singh Kalka and Jagdip Singh Kahlon said that Sikh intellectuals from 13 states including former Judges, Chairmen of banks and prominent Sikhs attended this meeting. They said that it was decided unanimously that till date Law Commission has not shared any draft of the proposed UCC and when there is no draft how can we oppose anything and any opposition at this stage in unnecessary.

They said that it was decided that we should wait for release of draft by Law Commission and after it is released by Commission, 11 member panel will analyse it and will prepare a draft of demands and objections of Sikh community to it. They said that members of community led by DSGMC will meet Law Commission as well as Law Minister on the issue and if need we will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi also and apprise them about views of Sikh community.

Kalka and Kahlon said that when we have no draft of UCC before us, how can we oppose such a thing.

Responding to a media query, they said that opposition by political people of proposed UCC in absence of its draft may be their individual perspective, but DSGMC is a religious body who will first check draft and later decide stand on it.

They said that every state has its own requirements and no politics should be added to it. They said that we will not accept forcing any political idea on us.

They said that in the meeting it was also decided that apart from UCC all the issues being faced by Sikh community should be deliberated upon with community intellectuals and DSGMC should take a lead on resolving these issues.
