OMAN: In a Thrilling semi-final showdown on Saturday, India displayed their supremacy on the hockey field by defeating Malaysia with a commanding scoreline of 10-4. This resounding victory secured India’s place in the final of the inaugural Men’s Hockey 5s Asia Cup, setting the stage for an electrifying encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Pakistan also cemented their spot in the final with a convincing 7-3 win over Oman in the first semi-final, further intensifying the anticipation for the epic showdown between India and Pakistan.
Notably, the path to the final has not been without its challenges for India, as they had previously faced Pakistan in an intense elite pool stage match, which ended in a 4-5 defeat. However, in the semi-final clash against Malaysia, India’s determination and skill were on full display.
The star-studded Indian squad delivered a remarkable performance, with multiple players making significant contributions. Mohammad Raheel, showcasing his exceptional scoring prowess, found the back of the net four times in the ninth, 16th, 24th, and 28th minutes. Maninder Singh opened the scoring for India in the second minute, while Pawan Rajbhar (13th minute), Sukhwinder (21st minute), Dipsan Tirki (22nd minute), Jugraj Singh (23rd minute), and Gurjot Singh (29th minute) added to India’s goal tally.
On the Malaysian side, captain Ismail Asia Abu (fourth minute), Akhimullah Anuar (seventh and 19th minute), and Muhammad Din (19th minute) showed their mettle by scoring crucial goals.
India’s victory in the semi-final not only secured their place in the final of the Men’s Hockey 5s Asia Cup but also guaranteed their participation in the 2024 FIH Hockey5s World Cup.
