NAPA Condemns the Killing of Journalist Rana Pratap Bairagi in Bangladesh

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemns the brutal and cold-blooded killing of senior journalist and Hindu newspaper editor Rana Pratap Bairagi, who was shot dead in Bangladesh amid a continuing spate of violence. This shocking incident represents a grave attack on press freedom, democratic values, and the basic human right to freedom of expression.

NAPA expresses its deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and readers of Rana Pratap Bairagi. He was known for his courageous journalism and commitment to truth, and his murder has sent waves of fear across the journalistic community. The targeted killing of a newspaper editor reflects an alarming environment where journalists are increasingly silenced through violence and intimidation.

The killing of Rana Pratap Bairagi also raises serious concerns regarding the safety of journalists and minority communities in Bangladesh. When journalists belonging to minority groups are targeted, it not only endangers individual lives but also weakens social harmony and democratic accountability. Such acts of violence undermine public confidence in the rule of law and freedom of the press.

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) demands an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into this murder. Those responsible—both the perpetrators and those who may have planned or facilitated the crime—must be brought to justice without delay. Ending impunity for crimes against journalists is essential to protecting democratic institutions.

NAPA urges the Government of Bangladesh to take concrete and effective measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists, editors, and media workers. Strong legal protections, swift judicial action, and a clear commitment to press freedom are urgently needed to prevent further attacks.

We also call upon international human rights organizations, press freedom watchdogs, and democratic governments to take serious note of this killing and to stand in solidarity with journalists in Bangladesh. An attack on the press anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending freedom of expression and the rights of journalists worldwide. We stand with the global media community in demanding justice for Rana Pratap Bairagi and accountability for all acts of violence against the press.
