NAPA Slams Practice of Announcing CM Faces, Calls It a Direct Attack on Democracy

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has sharply criticized political parties for announcing their would-be chief ministerial candidates before elections, calling the practice a “mockery of democratic values” and a deliberate attempt to silence the voice of elected representatives. In a strongly worded statement, NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal said that pre-declaring CM faces reduces elections to a personality contest rather than a democratic exercise meant to elect capable legislators.

Chahal stated that when a party decides its chief minister in advance, it undermines the authority of MLAs and MPs, who are supposed to be the true representatives of the people. He added that the Constitution empowers elected legislators to choose their leader, and bypassing this process by announcing a CM face beforehand is nothing less than “the murder of democracy”. According to him, this approach sends a dangerous message that the opinions of MLAs do not matter, even before they are elected.

NAPA warned that such political strategies erode the spirit of parliamentary democracy and reduce elected representatives to “mere rubber stamps”. Chahal emphasized that people vote for MLAs to represent their voices in the assembly, not to merely endorse a pre-chosen leader. He urged all political parties to respect democratic norms and allow elected legislators to select their chief minister through an internal democratic vote, rather than imposing decisions from the top.

Reiterating NAPA’s commitment to democratic rights and transparency, Chahal appealed to voters to question parties that undermine constitutional values for political gain. He noted that democracy thrives when MLAs and MPs have a meaningful role, and not when leadership decisions are dictated before a single vote is cast.
