The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemns the highly irresponsible, insensitive, and offensive statement made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurdeep Singh Randhawa regarding the Sikh turban. NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal said the turban is not merely a piece of cloth; it is a sacred symbol of Sikh identity, dignity, faith, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to principles of justice, equality, and human rights.
Such reckless remarks not only hurt the deep religious sentiments of millions of Sikhs across the world but also undermine the spirit of harmony and mutual respect that forms the foundation of India’s democratic and secular fabric. The Sikh turban represents centuries of struggle, martyrdom, and selfless service to humanity. Any attempt to ridicule or politicize this sacred symbol is an insult to the entire Sikh community and to those who laid down their lives defending the dignity and freedom of the nation.
NAPA firmly believes that elected representatives hold a constitutional and moral responsibility to uphold unity, respect all faiths, and avoid statements that can incite social tension, communal disharmony, or hatred. Unfortunately, the statement made by MLA Gurdeep Singh Randhawa falls far short of these standards and reflects a dangerous disregard for cultural and religious sensitivity.
The Sikh community, both in India and across the globe, has always stood for peace, tolerance, and democratic values. However, silence in the face of repeated insults to Sikh identity is no longer acceptable. NAPA demands an immediate and unconditional public apology from Gurdeep Singh Randhawa for his remarks. Furthermore, we urge the leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party to take strict disciplinary action to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
NAPA also calls upon state authorities and constitutional institutions to take serious note of this matter and ensure that freedom of speech is not misused to demean any religious community. Respect for diversity is the cornerstone of a strong democracy, and any erosion of this principle must be addressed firmly and decisively.
Chahal reiterated that the Sikh turban is a global symbol of honor, courage, and service to humanity. Any insult to it is an insult to the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution itself. The Sikh community expects accountability, respect, and justice.
