NAPA supported AAP MP’s purposal to Dope & Medical Tests Mandatory for Boys Before Marriage

Aam Aadmi Party Member of Parliament Malwinder Singh Kang has raised a critical demand before the Central Government, calling for a comprehensive law mandating dope tests and full medical examinations for boys prior to marriage. The MP has urged the Government of India to introduce this legislation in the Lok Sabha at the earliest, framing it as an urgent step to protect the rights, health, and dignity of women entering matrimonial bonds.

Addressing the issue, MP Kang underscored that the absence of such a legal requirement has left countless young women and their families vulnerable. Marriages are being entered into without any disclosure of serious health conditions, addiction to narcotics, or other medically significant factors — circumstances that frequently come to light only after the union is formalised, often with devastating consequences for the bride and her family.

Napa Satnam Singh Chahal, expressing full support for MP Kang’s demand, stated that the call reflects the ground reality in Punjab today. The state has witnessed a sharp increase in divorce cases in recent years, with a significant proportion attributed to drug addiction and concealed medical conditions on the part of the groom. It is a humanitarian issue as much as a legal one, and the AAP stands firmly behind this demand for legislative action.

“Mandatory dope and medical tests before marriage will protect our daughters Mandatory dope and medical tests before marriage will protect our daughters and bring accountability into one of life’s most sacred institutions.”

Concealed drug addiction and undisclosed health conditions identified as leading causes of matrimonial breakdown.
NAPA Executive Drector Satnam Singh Chahal expresses full solidarity and support for the MP’s position.
The AAP leadership has consistently championed the rights of women in Punjab, and this demand is a direct extension of that commitment. MP Kang’s proposal seeks to ensure that informed consent  a cornerstone of any equitable marriage — is genuinely achievable, rather than a formality undermined by suppressed information.

Chahal further noted that the demand is not intended to stigmatise or discriminate, but rather to establish a transparent, standardised process that safeguards all parties involved. Just as educational qualifications and family background are considered before marriage, health and sobriety  factors directly affecting the wellbeing of the future family  deserve equal scrutiny under the law.

The Aam Aadmi Party calls upon the Central Governme The Aam Aadmi Party calls upon the Central Government to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves. The rising divorce statistics in Punjab are not merely numbers  they represent lives disrupted, women harmed, and families broken. Legislation of this nature, long overdue, has the potential to prevent untold suffering and restore dignity and trust to the institution of marriage.
