Oakland, Calif. – November 3, 2025: Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) has reached new heights in its fourth year participating in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, having achieved Level 4, the second highest ACA certification.
“Our OAK team is committed to reducing carbon emissions in our airport operations,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon. “We’re proud of the efforts that we have made towards that goal in recent years which led to this prestigious accreditation, and we thank our tenants for their partnership and cooperation as we implement carbon reduction strategies.”
ACA is an international decarbonization certification program for airports developed by Airports Council International (ACI). ACA provides a standardized methodology for airports to quantify their emissions and provides a framework to develop decarbonization strategies. ACA establishes increasingly ambitious requirements through 5 levels of certification. ACA is also the only airport-specific carbon standard that relies on internationally recognized methodologies.
There are 614 airports accredited in ACA. OAK joins an elite group of ten other North American airports at Level 4/4+. OAK is pursuing Level 4’s stated goal of “Transforming airport operations and those of its business partners to achieve absolute emissions reductions” through development and implementation of decarbonization projects at OAK and is committed to developing partnerships to support a Zero Emission future for OAK and its tenants.
Some of the notable OAK projects and initiatives that have contributed to achieving Level 4 include:
- Carbon-free Power: Working with its utility provider, Port Utilities Department sources 75 percent of its electricity from carbon-free sources.
- Fleet Decarbonization: Transitioning approximately 40 percent of OAK vehicles to alternative fuels (i.e. electricity, renewable diesel, and renewable natural gas).
- Electric Shuttle Buses: Operating five electric shuttle buses at a new state-of-the-art bus charging depot that will accommodate OAK’s clean fleet of the future.
- Tenant Workgroups: Working with tenants to identify barriers to zero emissions operations and seek funding to implement projects.
- Efficient Buildings: Optimizing OAK building system performance through upgraded building controls.
