London-Preet Kaur Gill MP has highlighted the government’s latest announcement as a strong signal that the UK is becoming a global hub for artificial intelligence, with new jobs, investment, and innovation flowing across the country. The government has unveiled a major package that includes the creation of a new AI Growth Zone in South Wales, adding to the North Wales and North East AI Growth Zones announced recently. These regions—historic drivers of the industrial revolution—are now set to lead the next great technological transformation.
According to the announcement, the new South Wales AI Growth Zone is expected to attract £10 billion in investment and create more than 5,000 jobs over the next decade. The initiative will be supported by up to £5 million in UK government funding to boost skills, technology adoption, and local opportunities. Preet Kaur Gill MP emphasised that collaboration between the UK Government and the Welsh Government is central to ensuring that communities in Wales are fully empowered to benefit from this rapid technological shift.
Nationally, the government also confirmed £350 million in new AI investment deals, creating 1,000 high-skilled jobs across the UK. Leading AI companies have chosen Britain as the site for their first European offices, while others plan to significantly expand their UK workforce. Gill described this as a powerful vote of confidence in the UK’s ability to lead the world in AI research, development, and deployment.
A key part of this new strategy involves inspiring the next generation. The government announced the appointment of new AI ambassadors, who will engage directly with school children, introduce them to AI-related career paths, and support the wider adoption of technology that lifts productivity and expands job opportunities.
