Chandigarh-North American Punjabi Association(NAPA) in a press release issued here to day said that the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Punjab remains one of the most painful and deeply sensitive issues for the Sikh community worldwide. Despite repeated assurances from Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, and Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal that those responsible would be arrested within days, three years have passed, yet justice remains elusive.
NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said that In 2015, Punjab witnessed a series of heartbreaking sacrilege incidents, most notably in Bargari village, Faridkot district. These incidents led to mass protests, police action, and political promises to bring the culprits to justice. In the years that followed, leaders from different political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), claimed that swift action would be taken against those responsible.
However, despite some arrests over the years, the main conspirators remain free, fueling public frustration and anger. Arvind Kejriwal had promised exemplary punishment to those behind the desecration if his party came to power, but three years into the AAP government in Punjab, there has been little progress. There were Limited Arrests but No Convictions added Chahal. Despite these arrests, the key masterminds behind the sacrilege incidents are still at large, raising serious concerns about the sincerity and effectiveness of the government’s efforts.
The Sikh community has repeatedly expressed outrage over the delayed justice and lack of concrete action. Sikh organizations, religious leaders, and activists have organized protests and marches demanding that the real culprits be arrested and held accountable. The slow progress has only deepened public resentment, leading many to believe that justice is being deliberately delayed due to political interference.
The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemns the lack of accountability and demands the following immediate actions from the Punjab Government and law enforcement agencies:
Chahal urged that all those responsible, including the masterminds behind the sacrilege, must be identified and brought to justice without further delay. The SIT and Punjab Police must complete their probe transparently and submit their findings to the public. Exemplary punishment should be given to those found guilty to ensure that such incidents never happen again. Accountability from Political Leaders – Leaders who made promises to the Sikh community must be held accountable for their failure to deliver justice. The desecration of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is not just a crime against Sikhs; it is an attack on religious sentiments, peace, and harmony. The failure to arrest the real perpetrators even after three years of political assurances has shaken the faith of the community in the system.
If justice is not served, NAPA will escalate this issue at the international level and call for global Sikh organizations to put pressure on the Indian government. We will not allow this matter to be forgotten or brushed aside. The Sikh community demands justice – not tomorrow, not later, but NOW.
