41 Years Since Attack on Sri Akal Takht Sahib: Sikh Community’s Quest for Justice Continues – Brahmpura

Tarn Taran – Ravinder Singh Brahmpura, Vice President of Shiromani Akali Dal and Incharge of Khadoor Sahib constituency, has expressed profound grief on the 41st anniversary of the June 1984 military attack on Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib, an event that is infamously referred to as ‘Saka Nila Tara’ or Operation Blue Star. He described the assault as an indelible wound on the hearts of the Sikh community.
Brahmpura stated, “Forty-one years ago today, on June 1, 1984, the Indian army launched an attack on the Sikhs’ most sacred shrines, Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib. This was the culmination of the anti-Sikh mindset perpetuated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Congress party. The assault was not merely on buildings; it was a direct attack on the honor, glory, history, and the way of life bestowed upon us by our Gurus. Thousands of innocent Sikh devotees were martyred during this massacre (ghallughara), and the invaluable treasure of the Sikh Reference Library was obliterated.”
He further emphasized, “Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale was a revered martyr and saint-soldier for us, who laid down his life for the protection of Sikh principles and community rights. The Congress government targeted the entire Sikh community in the guise of eliminating him.”
In a pointed critique, Brahmpura condemned the Congress party as primarily responsible for this heinous act. “We demand accountability from not only the central leadership of the Congress party but also from those leaders within Punjab Congress who were complicit in this atrocity or who chose to remain silent,” he asserted.
Brahmpura committed to raising awareness of this issue on both national and international platforms. “I, Ravinder Singh Brahmpura, from the sacred land of Khadoor Sahib, pledge that the Shiromani Akali Dal will continue to advocate against the injustices faced by the Sikh community. We are dedicated to bringing this matter to the attention of international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the United Nations Human Rights Commission, so that the world understands how an elected government can perpetrate atrocities against its own citizens.”
He appealed to the Sikh community to maintain unity and to conduct their struggle for justice peacefully and democratically. “Our quest for justice will persist until those accountable are held responsible and the wounds inflicted upon the Sikh community are healed,” Brahmpura concluded
