Sikh Unity is the Need of the Hour: NAPA Appeals for Peaceful Ghallughara Divas

Chandigarh -Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), has issued a strong appeal to the leadership of Damdami Taksal, including Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, as well as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and other Sikh organisations, urging them to maintain peace and refrain from any anti-Sikh or disruptive activities at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib during the observance of Ghallughara Divas on June 6, 2025.

Chahal emphasised that any untoward incident at the holiest seat of Sikh authority—the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib—not only disrespects the sanctity of this spiritual institution but also risks severely damaging the image of the Sikh community on a global scale. “If any disorder or disrespectful conduct occurs on this solemn day, the blame will rest squarely on the shoulders of those organizations involved, and history will not absolve them. The global Sikh community will not forgive such actions,” Chahal warned.

Ghallughara Divas is a solemn day of remembrance, marking the tragic events of Operation Blue Star and the countless lives lost during that dark chapter of Sikh history. It is a time for collective mourning, introspection, and a reaffirmation of Sikh values—not a day to promote division or political agendas. Chahal urged all Sikh organisations to uphold the dignity of the occasion by conducting themselves with restraint, respect, and in line with Sikh principles.

Highlighting the current state of fragmentation within the Sikh Panth, Chahal stated, “Sikh unity is the need of the hour. The divisions among various Sikh factions are weakening the community’s strength and global standing. I appeal to all Sikh leaders and organizations to set aside their ideological differences and come together under one Nishan Sahib—one united banner of Sikh sovereignty and identity.”

He reiterated that the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib belongs to all Sikhs, not any one group or organisation, and its sanctity must be preserved at all costs. Any act that brings disrespect or disunity at this sacred institution goes against the very spirit of Sikhism and the sacrifices made by Sikh martyrs.

In conclusion, Satnam Singh Chahal called on all Sikh organizations to behave responsibly and respectfully on June 6, and to use the observance of Ghallughara Divas as an opportunity to foster solidarity, not strife.
