Tarn Taran, Punjab:In a serious case of state machinery being misused for political purposes, a post from the official government social media handle of the District Public Relations Office, Tarn Taran (Info & PR Dept.) was reportedly used to promote the Aam Aadmi Party’s campaign in Ludhiana West.
The revelation came to light after a formal complaint was submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab. Following the complaint, the promotional post, which violated the Model Code of Conduct, was swiftly taken down. However, the incident has raised grave concerns about the ethical standards and neutrality of public institutions during election periods.
Legal experts and opposition leaders alike have condemned the act, calling it a blatant and illegal use of taxpayer-funded resources to benefit a political party. Critics argue that such misuse not only undermines the democratic process but also erodes public trust in government systems.
“Government communication platforms are meant for public welfare and transparent dissemination of information, not for political propaganda,” said a senior election rights advocate. “The fact that an official page was used to endorse a campaign directly violates the principles of free and fair elections.”
Several political parties have now urged the Election Commission to initiate stern action against those responsible and to issue clear guidelines preventing such misuse in the future. Civil society voices have also demanded a thorough investigation to ensure accountability at all levels.
The Election Commission is expected to release an official statement shortly. As election fever rises across Punjab, this incident has reignited the debate on the need for stronger checks on the use of government infrastructure in political campaigning.
