London-Preet Kaur Gill MP has strongly welcomed the launch of the UK Government’s new and ambitious Industrial Strategy, describing it as a major turning point for British industry and a much-needed opportunity to boost growth and job creation in regions like the West Midlands.
Unveiled earlier this week, the Modern Industrial Strategy outlines a ten-year plan to significantly increase investment, create good, skilled jobs, and make Britain the best place to do business. At its core, the strategy aims to remove two of the most pressing barriers facing UK industry: the high cost of electricity and long delays for grid connections.
The government has identified eight priority sectors that will receive focused support to drive long-term growth in collaboration with industry leaders. These include Advanced Manufacturing, Creative Industries, Clean Energy Industries, Digital and Technologies, Professional and Business Services, Life Sciences, Financial Services, and Defence.
One of the most immediate benefits of the strategy is that more than 7,000 British businesses will see their electricity bills cut by up to 25% starting in 2027. This measure is part of Labour’s broader “Plan for Change,” aimed at delivering sustainable economic reform and encouraging industrial innovation.
Speaking on the significance of the strategy, Preet Kaur Gill MP said, “The industrial strategy is huge for the West Midlands. Nearly a million people in our region are employed in growth-driving sectors that are directly targeted by this strategy. After years of decline — with factories closed, jobs moved overseas, and communities neglected — it’s time to turn the page and rebuild our industrial strength.”
Ms. Gill joined the Business Secretary and leading business figures in London for the official launch of the strategy. While attending the event, she had the pleasure of meeting her constituent, Michaela — the CEO and founder of a pioneering clean energy company developing cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell technology.
The strategy has received strong support from all corners of the business and policy world. MAKE UK, the leading manufacturers’ body, called the announcement “one of the most important days for British industry in a generation.” Similarly, the IPPR think tank stated, “This government’s clear focus on clean energy, defense, and advanced manufacturing shows it’s serious about going green to boost the economy and create good jobs outside of London.”
With a bold and forward-thinking approach, the new industrial strategy is set to play a central role in reshaping the UK economy — and according to Preet Kaur Gill, the West Midlands is ready to lead the way.
