Supreme Court Grants Bail to Bikram Majithia in Disproportionate Assets Case

New Delhi-The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in the disproportionate assets (DA) case. Majithia had been in custody for nearly seven months after being arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in June 2025. The case alleged that he had amassed assets worth between ₹540 crore and ₹700 crore between 2006 and 2017, far beyond his known sources of income.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta delivered the order on February 2, 2026. The court observed that the investigation report had already been filed and that there was no evidence of Majithia attempting to tamper with witnesses or obstruct the process. Given the lengthy trial ahead and his prolonged detention, the bench decided that bail was justified.

Majithia had earlier faced charges under the NDPS Act, but he was granted bail in that matter in 2022. The Punjab government had challenged his bail in 2025, but the Supreme Court dismissed the plea. In the DA case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had denied bail in December 2025, citing concerns about his influence. However, the apex court has now overturned that decision.

The ruling has triggered strong political reactions in Punjab. Supporters of the Shiromani Akali Dal hailed the decision as a vindication of their leader, while opposition parties criticized the bail order, demanding transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigation. Legal experts have noted that the judgment reinforces the principle of fair trial and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

Majithia is expected to be released from custody shortly after the completion of formalities. The trial in the disproportionate assets case will continue in the lower courts, keeping the spotlight firmly on one of Punjab’s most high-profile political figures.
