Moga, Punjab: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Punjab after senior Congress leader Pargat Singh alleged that a government school teacher in Rania village of Moga was confined inside the school premises under police watch, allegedly to prevent any protest during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Jalalabad.

Raising sharp questions over the state government’s functioning, Pargat Singh described the incident as “authoritarianism at its peak,” claiming that the deployment of police to restrict a teacher’s movement reflects a growing intolerance toward dissent. He questioned whether such measures align with the government’s much-publicized education reforms, often promoted under the banner of “Sikhya Kranti.”

According to reports circulating on social media, the teacher was allegedly prevented from leaving the school campus, effectively placing them under unofficial detention. The move, if verified, raises serious concerns about civil liberties and the treatment of educators in the state.

Pargat Singh, a former Olympian and MLA, took to social media to criticize the government, asking what threat a teacher could possibly pose to the Chief Minister. He argued that silencing voices through force undermines democratic values and sends a troubling message to the education community.

The Punjab government has not yet issued an official statement clarifying the circumstances of the incident. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have intensified their attacks, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party-led administration of suppressing dissent and misusing state machinery.

The issue is likely to gain further traction in the coming days, as teacher unions and political parties may demand a detailed inquiry into the matter.
