Chandigarh — The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government in Punjab is facing mounting criticism from opposition leaders, civil society groups, and press freedom advocates for allegedly using the state police machinery to intimidate political opponents, independent journalists, and social media influencers critical of the regime.
Reports from across the state indicate that several journalists and YouTubers have been summoned for extended interrogations lasting several hours. During these sessions, they are reportedly asked intrusive questions not only about their work but also their financial transactions, foreign travel history, and even their family background. In some cases, there have been allegations that access to their bank accounts was manipulated or frozen without prior notice, raising serious concerns about privacy and abuse of power.
Opposition parties have condemned what they call an “undeclared emergency” in Punjab. “This government has given an open hand to the police to harass anyone who questions them. Journalists are being treated like criminals, and YouTubers are being witch-hunted,” said a senior leader from the Shiromani Akali Dal. The BJP and Congress have also raised their voice in the state assembly, accusing the AAP of throttling dissent and misusing state resources to suppress criticism.
At the center of the controversy is the glaring contrast between the party’s earlier promises and its current actions. While AAP had campaigned on a platform of transparency, accountability, and press freedom, its current governance is being viewed by many as authoritarian and vengeful. Critics point out that while independent media is being questioned for hours, there is no scrutiny or accountability for AAP leaders accused of corruption, nepotism, or questionable financial dealings.
Press bodies, including the Punjab Journalists Union and independent media watchdogs, have urged the Punjab government to immediately stop targeting the media and to uphold democratic values. “An elected government should welcome criticism, not punish it,” said a joint statement issued by several press organizations.
Despite the growing backlash, AAP leaders have so far remained silent on the matter. However, with the Lok Sabha elections behind and public scrutiny rising, it remains to be seen whether the Punjab government will dial down its aggressive tactics or continue down a path that many fear could erode the democratic fabric of the state.
