Ottawa, ON — Leading Sikh organizations across Canada have announced a coordinated, peaceful protest during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit, scheduled to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta from June 15–17, 2025.
The protest is being organized by the World Sikh Organization of Canada, Sikh Federation Canada, and several regional Gurdwara Councils, in response to what they describe as ongoing human rights violations against minorities in India and the Indian government’s alleged involvement in the 2023 assassination of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
“We are gathering not out of hatred, but out of a deep demand for justice,” said Moninder Singh, a spokesperson for the protest coalition. “Canada is a nation that upholds the rule of law. We call on the Government of India to fully cooperate with the RCMP investigation into the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and cease its interference in the lives of Sikh Canadians.”
Organizers have secured legal protest permits and are working closely with local police in Ottawa, Calgary, and Alberta’s Kananaskis region to ensure a peaceful demonstration. The actions will include:
-
A mass march and vigil in downtown Ottawa on June 15
-
Protest zones near the G7 Summit site in Alberta on June 16–17
-
Press conferences and digital advocacy campaigns using the hashtags #JusticeForNijjar and #ModiNotWelcome
The Sikh community further calls on Prime Minister Mark Carney and other G7 leaders to raise concerns about human rights abuses, suppression of press freedom, and the targeting of religious minorities under Modi’s leadership.
Sikh leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a nonviolent, dignified, and constitutionally protected protest, in line with the values of Guru Nanak’s teachings and Canada’s democratic foundations.
