Fighting Hate with Solidarity: Jasmer Singh’s Story Must Not Be Forgotten

UNITED SIKHS acknowledges the recent sentencing of Gilbert Augustin, who received 10 years in prison for the violent hate-fueled assault that led to the tragic death of  Jasmer Singh – a devout Sikh, cherished father, and respected elder in the Queens Sikh community.

The brutal attack took place on October 19, 2023, following a minor car accident in Kew Gardens, Queens. The assailant, motivated by anti-Sikh bias, repeatedly referred to Mr. Singh as “turban man” during the assault. Mr. Singh succumbed to his injuries the next day, devastating his family and community.

This sentencing provides a measure of accountability, and UNITED SIKHS commends the Queens District Attorney’s Office for recognizing the gravity of the hate crime and for demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the pursuit of justice. We also recognize the dedicated efforts of NYPD investigators and prosecutors, whose commitment helped uncover the truth and deliver justice.

Since the incident, UNITED SIKHS had remained closely engaged with the Singh family – offering legal guidance and organizationalsupportthroughout the judicial process. Along with the local Sikh community, the organization helped facilitate public expressions of solidarity, including memorial gatherings and interfaith vigils that honored Jasmer Singh’s memory while promoting unity and collective unity.

The Sikh community in Queens and beyond has shown profound strength and unity in the face of this tragedy – holding vigils, offering support to the Singh family, and reaffirming their commitment to peace, dignity, and resilience.
