Unsuccessful Fire Attack Targets Surrey Fruiticana Amid Rising Extortion Cases

Surrey(Canada)An attempted arson at the Fruiticana grocery store near Scott Road and 80 Avenue in Surrey late last night has raised fresh concerns about the growing wave of extortion targeting local businesses. According to early information from community sources, unknown individuals tried to ignite a fire outside the store, but the attempt failed and no major damage occurred. No injuries were reported.

Investigators and community members believe the incident may be connected to an extortion demand, a pattern that has become increasingly common across Surrey and the Lower Mainland. Over the past year, several South Asian–owned businesses have reported receiving threats from individuals demanding money and warning of violence, shootings, or arson if payments are not made. Many of these threats originate from international phone numbers and messaging apps.

The attempted arson has heightened anxiety among business owners along the busy Scott Road corridor, an area with a high concentration of Punjabi‑owned shops and services. Several business operators say they are worried for their safety and are urging authorities to take stronger action to curb the escalating intimidation tactics.

Surrey RCMP and Surrey Police Service have begun reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with nearby businesses as part of their investigation. While police have not yet released an official statement, the circumstances of the incident closely resemble other extortion‑related attacks reported in recent months.

Community leaders say the issue has now reached a critical point, calling for coordinated efforts from municipal, provincial, and federal authorities to protect targeted families and restore confidence among local business owners.
