Preet Kaur Gill MP Joins Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Celebrating Vaisakhi at Downing Street

London — In a vibrant celebration of faith, culture, and community, Preet Kaur Gill MP, the UK’s first female Sikh Member of Parliament, joined Prime Minister Keir Starmer and a host of dignitaries and community leaders at No. 10 Downing Street to mark the festival of Vaisakhi.

Hosted by the Prime Minister, the event brought together Sikhs from across the country in recognition of their immense contributions to British society. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Starmer praised the Sikh community’s enduring commitment to fairness, equality, service, and justice — principles that resonate deeply within both Sikh teachings and the fabric of British democracy.

“It was a pleasure to attend a wonderful Vaisakhi event, hosted by Prime Minister Keir Starmer at No. 10,” said Preet Kaur Gill MP, who represents Birmingham Edgbaston and serves as the Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Public Health. “The celebration was not only a recognition of the Sikh faith, but a powerful affirmation of the role British Sikhs play in our national life — from the NHS and education to business and public service.”

The event featured traditional music, colorful decorations, and heartfelt speeches from community leaders and parliamentarians alike. Attendees also enjoyed langar-style refreshments, reflecting the Sikh tradition of offering free meals to all, regardless of background.

“As we mark Vaisakhi, we honour the birth of the Khalsa — a moment of courage, unity, and spiritual awakening,” Gill continued. “This day is a reminder of our shared commitment to upholding the dignity of all people. I would like to wish everyone celebrating a happy and peaceful Vaisakhi.”

Vaisakhi, which falls on April 13 this year, commemorates the formation of the Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji and is one of the most significant dates in the Sikh calendar. It is a time of prayer, reflection, and community service — values that were echoed in the messages shared during the Downing Street reception.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the strength of diversity in modern Britain and reiterated his commitment to protecting religious freedoms and promoting inclusion.

This year’s event at No. 10 marks a renewed effort by the government to engage more closely with the Sikh community and other faith groups, recognising their role in building a stronger, fairer society for all.
