Kisan union leader, son among 10 arrested

Khanna: Days after a group allegedly involved in sand mafia opened attack on a police team from Machhiwara police station and took away a tractor-trolley loaded with sand, the Khanna police Monday arrested ten people including a senior leader of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) and his son.

BKU (Ekta Ugrahan)’s Ludhiana district vice-president Kuldeep Singh Grewal alias Pardhan of Tandimand and his son Gagandeep Singh was arrested for allegedly opening an attack on policemen, manhandling and thrashing them. Others arrested are Naresh alias Tota of Sherpur Mand village of Machhiwara, Jarnail Singh alias Rinku, Kulwinder Singh alias Kala and Manpreet Singh of Mand Jhroudi village, Vedpal, Rishipal and Gurpreet Singh alias Laddu — all three from Tandimand village in Machhiwara and Gurwinder Singh alias Guddu of Fatehpur in Ropar.

Khanna SSP Amneet Kondal said that cops from Machhiwara police station had conducted a raid against illegal mining on July 20 following a tip-off and had seized a tractor trolley loaded with sand from the spot. When the team was heading towards the police station, a group of miscreants opened an attack on the police party, took away the seized trolley and thrashed the cops. She added that two cops also received fractures.
