38,498 Immigrants in Detention According to Latest ICE Detention Data

Washington- According to the latest immigrant detention data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), about 38,500 immigrants are held in detention centers across the country. The number of detained immigrants arrested by ICE has increased marginally to 10,955 as of January 28, 2024, the highest since the start of the Biden administration, while the number arrested by CBP stands at 27,543.

Detention centers in Texas have the highest average daily population of detainees so far this year, with the detention center in Dilley registering 1,810 people on average per day and nearby Pearsall at 1,657. The detention center in Lumpkin, Georgia, is third on the list with 1,523 detainees held per day on average.

Highlights from data updated in TRAC’s Detention Quick Facts tool show that:

• Immigration and Customs Enforcement held 38,498 in ICE detention according to data current as of January 28, 2024.
• 25,972 out of 38,498—or 67.5%—held in ICE detention have no criminal record, according to data current as of January 28, 2024. Many more have only minor offenses, including traffic violations.
• ICE relied on detention facilities in Texas to house the most people during FY 2024, according to data current as of January 22, 2024.
• ICE arrested 7,649 and CBP arrested 13,441 of the 21,090 people booked into detention by ICE during December 2023.
• South Texas Fam Residential Center in Dilley, Texas held the largest number of ICE detainees so far in FY 2024, averaging 1,810 per day (as of January 2024).
• ICE Alternatives to Detention (ATD) programs are currently monitoring 189,780 families and single individuals, according to data current as of January 27, 2024.
• San Francisco’s area office has highest number in ICE’s Alternatives to Detention (ATD) monitoring programs, according to data current as of January 27, 2024.
