Milpitas(California) The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has strongly condemned the alleged high-handed action of police following a violent clash between protesting students and law enforcement authorities, which left several students injured and created tension in the area.
In a statement issued today, NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal expressed deep concern over the manner in which police handled the student protest. Chahal said that students were raising their concerns peacefully, but the situation escalated after police reportedly used excessive force to disperse the gathering.
According to reports, the confrontation began when a group of students gathered to protest against certain administrative decisions and policies affecting their academic environment. Eyewitnesses claimed that the protest initially remained peaceful, with students carrying placards and demanding dialogue with authorities. However, the atmosphere turned chaotic when police personnel attempted to clear the area.
Several students were allegedly beaten with batons during the clash, and a number of them sustained injuries. Some of the injured students were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Videos circulating on social media also appear to show students being pushed, dragged, and struck during the confrontation, raising serious questions about the conduct of the police.
Chahal said such incidents damage public trust in law-enforcement agencies and undermine democratic values. He emphasised that students represent the future of society and their voices should be heard rather than suppressed through force.
“The use of excessive force against students is highly condemnable. Instead of resorting to violence, the authorities should engage in constructive dialogue with the protesting students and address their grievances through democratic means,” Chahal stated.
The NAPA president further called for a fair and transparent investigation into the incident to determine whether the police used disproportionate force. He demanded that those responsible for the alleged brutality be held accountable and that injured students receive proper medical care and justice.
Chahal also urged the administration and government authorities to ensure that campuses remain spaces for peaceful discussion and dissent. He stressed that protecting students’ democratic rights is essential for maintaining a healthy and progressive society.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism from civil society groups and student organizations, many of which are demanding an independent inquiry into the clash. Meanwhile, tensions remain high as students continue to call for accountability and reforms.
