Greenland: UK Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has highlighted the growing strategic importance of Greenland during a visit connected with the UK Parliament’s Defence Committee inquiry into the High North.Dhesi said Greenland was an “amazing place” whose strategic significance has increasingly come to the forefront of global attention.
During the visit, Dhesi said members of the Defence Committee held discussions with Danish political and defence officials, including the Danish Defence Minister, the Chief of Defence, and the Deputy Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands.The discussions focused on the changing security environment in the High North and how countries and institutions can work together to address emerging threats in the region.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, occupies a strategically important position between North America and Europe. Its location has made Arctic and High North security an increasingly significant issue for European and transatlantic defence planning.
Dhesi said the meetings formed part of the committee’s efforts to understand the security challenges facing the region and explore ways of collectively responding to them.
The visit comes amid growing international attention on the Arctic, where geopolitical competition, emerging security concerns and the region’s strategic geography have increased its importance in defence discussions.
