New Delhi, October 4, 2026: Newly appointed Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Pargat Singh began his new political responsibility by visiting the residence of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and seeking the blessings of his wife, Gursharan Kaur.
Pargat Singh shared photographs of the meeting on social media and said he wanted to begin his responsibility by remembering Dr. Manmohan Singh and seeking the blessings of his family. He described the former Prime Minister as a source of inspiration and highlighted his simplicity, integrity and dedication to the nation.
“Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji remains a source of inspiration for us. His simplicity, integrity and dedication to the nation will always inspire us to serve Punjab and India. He will always remain one of our national heroes,” Pargat Singh said in his post.
The visit came shortly after Pargat Singh was appointed Punjab Congress president, succeeding Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. The appointment took effect immediately following the Congress high command’s decision.
Speaking about the visit, Pargat Singh recalled Dr. Manmohan Singh’s contribution not only to India’s economic development but also to public institutions and values such as honesty, integrity and humanity. He said it was important for him to seek Gursharan Kaur’s blessings before proceeding to Punjab.
The gesture also placed emphasis on the values associated with Dr. Manmohan Singh’s public life. Rather than beginning his new assignment only with organisational meetings, Pargat Singh chose to pay respects to the former Prime Minister’s memory and acknowledge his family’s place in Punjab’s public life.
Pargat Singh has said that his new position is a responsibility and that he intends to work as a team captain, taking party leaders and workers along. He has also indicated that the Punjab Congress should focus on issues concerning the people of the state and strengthen its organisational presence.
The new Punjab Congress president has already begun meeting senior party leaders in Delhi following his appointment. The immediate task before him is to organise the state unit, coordinate with senior leaders and workers, and prepare the party for the political challenges ahead.
For Pargat Singh, the visit to Gursharan Kaur therefore marked more than a courtesy meeting. It was a symbolic beginning to a new political responsibility, with the Congress leader invoking the legacy of a former Prime Minister whose public image remains closely associated with simplicity, integrity and dedication to public service.
As he heads back to Punjab to assume the new responsibility, Pargat Singh’s message is that the next phase of his political journey will be guided, at least in part, by the values he says he associates with Dr. Manmohan Singh.
