Aujla Condemns Detention of Congress Leader Dinesh Bassi, Demands Due Process

Amritsar, MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla has strongly condemned the detention and reported arrest of senior Congress leader and former Amritsar Improvement Trust chairman Dinesh Bassi. According to reports, Bassi was called to the Civil Lines police station in connection with an alleged ₹50-lakh fraud case involving his son and another person, but was subsequently detained for questioning. The action triggered a protest by Congress councillors and party workers outside the police station.

Aujla said he personally visited the police station and raised his objection with senior police officials. He questioned how Bassi was detained and stressed that any FIR, detention, or arrest must follow due process, transparency, and established legal procedure. Congress leaders have alleged that the police action was politically motivated, while police are investigating the underlying fraud allegations. Reports also said tensions rose outside the station, with Congress councillors alleging police personnel pushed them out.

Aujla called upon the Punjab government to ensure that the police do not become a means of suppressing opposition voices. “Answer questions—don’t suppress voices,” he said, arguing that disagreements between the government and Opposition should be addressed through democratic and legal institutions rather than confrontation.

The episode has once again brought attention to the importance of transparency in police proceedings, particularly when politically active individuals are involved. While allegations made by both sides remain subject to verification, the immediate issue is whether the investigation and any subsequent legal action are conducted strictly according to law.
