More than 20 million eligible Medicare beneficiaries are receiving a one-time $90 payment in October 2026 to help offset their Medicare Part B premium. President Donald Trump announced the payment on October 2, and the Centres for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) subsequently provided details about eligibility and distribution.
The payment is not a new $90 monthly Social Security benefit. It is a one-time Medicare Part B premium rebate funded through the Medicare Improvement Fund. Most eligible beneficiaries are expected to receive the money through direct deposit, while those without direct deposit will receive a paper check by mail.
According to CMS, approximately 20.8 million people qualify. They must generally be enrolled in Original Medicare Part B, live in the United States, not have their Part B premiums paid through Medicaid, and not pay the Medicare income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA). People enrolled in Medicare Advantage are not eligible for this particular payment.
This is why some announcements circulating online can be confusing. Some posts describe it simply as a “$90 payment for seniors” or a “$90 Social Security check.” Although many eligible people will see the money deposited through the Social Security payment system, it is officially a Medicare Part B premium rebate, not a new Social Security benefit.
CMS says most eligible beneficiaries should receive the $90 direct deposit around October 8, 2026. Those receiving paper checks are expected to receive them later in October. Beneficiaries can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to ask about eligibility. For payment-status questions, the Social Security Administration says beneficiaries can call 1-800-772-1213 beginning October 15, 2026
