CHANDIGARH(By Satnam Singh Chahal ): Punjab Congress leader Rana Gurjeet Singh has raised concerns over the deepening agrarian crisis in Punjab, highlighting alleged financial losses suffered by farmers, difficulties in agricultural mandis and concerns surrounding illegal mining. He has called for greater government accountability and timely relief for farmers facing economic uncertainty.
In a statement shared on social media, Singh said farmers were bearing the burden of mounting agricultural losses and distress in the mandis. He stressed that farmers deserved remunerative prices for their produce, timely compensation for crop damage and effective government support during periods of hardship.
The Punjab Congress also criticised the state government’s handling of agricultural issues, alleging that farmers had suffered losses estimated at ₹4,000 crore in 2024, followed by further losses in 2025 and another estimated ₹4,000 crore in the current period referred to in its statement. These figures represent claims made by the Congress and require verification through official agricultural data and independent assessments.
The issue of crop losses remains particularly significant in Punjab, where the agricultural economy supports millions of livelihoods directly and indirectly. Farmers face multiple risks, including adverse weather, crop damage, fluctuating market prices, rising cultivation costs and uncertainty over the timely procurement and payment for their produce. Delays in compensation can further increase the financial pressure on farming households.
Singh also drew attention to complaints concerning the functioning of agricultural mandis, where farmers depend on transparent procurement arrangements, fair weighing practices and timely payments. Any shortcomings in these systems can affect farmers’ ability to repay loans, purchase agricultural inputs and prepare for the next cropping season.
Illegal sand and gravel mining was another concern raised in the political criticism. Allegations of unlawful extraction and irregularities in the mining sector call for transparent investigation, effective enforcement and the public disclosure of relevant regulatory action. The allegations should be assessed on the basis of documentary evidence and official findings.
The government faces questions about the measures it has taken to assess agricultural losses, process compensation claims and address complaints relating to mandi operations and illegal mining. A transparent account of the losses reported, compensation sanctioned and payments actually made would help the public assess the scale of the problem and the effectiveness of relief measures.
For Punjab’s farmers, the central issue is not simply political blame but the delivery of practical support. Timely crop-loss assessments, predictable compensation procedures, transparent procurement and stronger oversight of agricultural markets are important elements of a credible response to rural economic distress.
As political debate over Punjab’s agricultural future continues, the government’s response to these concerns will be judged by verifiable action, published financial data and the extent to which affected farmers receive the assistance to which they are entitled.
