Arvind Kejriwal Hosts Daughter’s Wedding at CM House, Sparks Austerity Debate

New Delhi — Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has stirred debate after hosting his daughter’s wedding at the official Chief Minister’s residence in Delhi. While the function was reportedly private and modest, it has sparked sharp political and public reactions due to Kejriwal’s long-standing advocacy against lavish weddings.

In the early 2010s, Kejriwal built his image as an anti-corruption crusader and a champion of simplicity. During his 2012–13 campaign, he called on citizens to avoid extravagant wedding functions and take a public pledge for simple, low-cost ceremonies. “Why waste lakhs on weddings when it can fund education or health for the underprivileged?” he famously asked.

Critics now accuse him of hypocrisy. Opposition leaders, especially from the BJP, slammed the use of the CM residence — a state facility — for a personal event. “This is VIP culture at its best from the same man who said he would end it,” said BJP’s Shehzad Poonawalla.

Social media also lit up with mixed opinions. Some labeled it a betrayal of principles, while others defended Kejriwal, stating no public funds were used and the wedding was within legal rights.

AAP insiders maintain the event was “simple, heartfelt, and attended only by close family and friends.” They emphasize that using official residences for family events is not new and has precedent across party lines.

Political observers note the event may not hurt Kejriwal legally, but the optics could damage his image as the “aam aadmi” (common man) politician. “The real issue isn’t the legality — it’s the contrast with the moral high ground he once claimed,” said analyst Ananya Chaturvedi.

Kejriwal has not yet responded publicly. Whether this controversy passes quickly or leaves a longer-lasting dent in his political credibility remains to be seen.
