NAPA seeks clarification from Sri Akal Takhat Sahib over the controversial foot-touching gesture with former Minister Such Singh Langah

Milpitas(California) Jalandhar/Chandigarh -The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), a non-partisan organisation representing the global Punjabi and Sikh diaspora, expresses concern and seeks clarification regarding widely circulated images showing the Jathedar Sahib of Sri Akal Takht Sahib appearing to touch the feet of former Punjab Minister Sucha Singh Langah.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib holds the highest temporal authority in the Sikh Panth and symbolises justice, dignity, and sovereignty. Because of this sacred position, every public action associated with its office naturally carries deep institutional significance and is closely observed by the Sikh community worldwide.

In this context, many members of the Sikh community across Punjab and the global diaspora have expressed concern and confusion regarding the meaning and circumstances of this gesture. While Sikh tradition upholds humility and respect for all human beings, the symbolic role of the Jathedar is viewed as representing the collective authority and dignity of the Panth.

NAPA notes that Sucha Singh Langah was earlier excommunicated in 2017 by Sri Akal Takht Sahib and later reinstated after religious atonement. However, the recent public visuals have raised questions among Sikhs regarding the appropriate expression of respect in relation to political figures and religious authority.

NAPA respectfully urges Sri Akal Takht Sahib to provide clarification on whether this gesture was a personal act of respect or carried any institutional, cultural, or religious significance. Such clarification would help address widespread concern and prevent misunderstandings within the global Sikh community.

NAPA reiterates that this statement is not intended to question the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib but to seek transparency and clarity in the interest of maintaining trust, dignity, and unity among Sikhs worldwide.
