There are some personalities whose lives leave a lasting impression not because of wealth, power, or position, but because of their honesty, simplicity, and unwavering commitment to justice. Jaswant Singh Khalra was one such remarkable individual. Although many people know him for his courageous fight against human rights violations in Punjab, I would like to share a personal memory that reflects the kind of person he truly was. During the 1995 Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election, I was serving as the General Secretary of the district unit of Akali Dal (Amritsar). At that time, Justice Ajit Singh Bains was the party’s candidate. While many senior leaders travelled from one campaign event to another in cars, Jaswant Singh Khalra chose a very different path. He travelled with Justice Ajit Singh Bains in an ordinary cycle rickshaw while campaigning. There was no desire for comfort, status, or publicity. His only concern was to meet the people, listen to them, and work sincerely for the cause he believed in. That simple image of Jaswant Singh Khalra sitting in a rickshaw during the campaign has remained with me throughout the years. His humility was extraordinary. Despite being respected for his fearless work and dedication, he never sought privilege or special treatment. He believed that public life was about service, not personal comfort. Today, as I remember Jaswant Singh Khalra, I feel it is important to share this memory with the people of Punjab.
In an era when politics often revolves around power and luxury, his life reminds us that true leadership is measured by integrity, sacrifice, and closeness to ordinary people. The Punjab of today still needs leaders who possess the honesty, courage, and simplicity that Jaswant Singh Khalra represented. His legacy continues to inspire those who believe that public service is a responsibility rather than a means of personal gain. This is my humble tribute to a man whose simplicity was as remarkable as his courage. I hope the younger generation of Punjab learns not only about his struggle for justice but also about the humility that defined his character
