SGPC takes notice of Sikkim CM’s statement about Gurdwara Guru Dongmar Sahib

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), taking notice of a statement given by the Chief Minister (CM) of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, regarding Gurdwara Sri Guru Dongmar Sahib, has written a letter to Chairman of National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Iqbal Singh Lalpura.

In a letter written by the SGPC General Secretary Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal, it has been said that the case of Gurdwara Sri Guru Dongmar Sahib has been sub judice in the High Court of Sikkim for a long time. The honorable court has reserved the judgment of this case.

The SGPC General Secretary wrote to Chairman NCM to bring to his notice a highly reprehensible and controversial statement of Sikkim CM Shri Prem Singh Tamang, regarding Gurdwara Sri Guru Dongmar Sahib, Sikkim. Notably, a video of Shri Tamang’s statement came to light in which he addressed some members of his community and told them that the place of Gurdwara Sri Guru Dongmar Sahib belongs to their community and nobody else can take it.

“You must be aware that the case of Gurdwara Sri Guru Dongmar Sahib is sub-judice in the Sikkim High Court and the decision has been reserved by the honorable court. At this stage of the long-standing dispute, the CM’s statement of CM is to incite the local community members against the Sikh community can escalate tension. In violation of the honorable court, the Chief Minister of Sikkim said that under no circumstances Gurdwara Sahib will be allowed to be built, which is highly reprehensible and illogical”, wrote Bhai Grewal to NCM Chairman Lalpura.

He further said that the video statement of Sikkim CM also hints that his government is trying to influence this case in favour of their community and against the Sikh community. However, as a CM of a state, Shri Tamang should be just while treating all the community equally and make efforts to resolve this issue amicably setting an example of communal harmony in his state.

The SGPC General Secretary said that the Government of India, the NCM, and the State Government of Sikkim should resolve this dispute amicably in an out-of-court agreement as ordered by the Hon’ble court on April 27, 2023, and set an example.

He demanded from the NCM Chairman to take cognizance of Sikkim CM’s reprehensible statement and issue necessary directions to refrain him from doing so in the future.
