Auto Dealership Targeted in Extortion Shooting in Surrey’s Newton Area

Surrey-An auto dealership in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood was targeted in an apparent extortion-related shooting early on the morning of January 20, 2026. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of 72 Avenue and King George Boulevard, according to the Surrey Police Service (SPS).

Police say multiple shots were fired at the business, damaging several vehicles on the lot as well as parts of the dealership building. No injuries were reported, and officers quickly secured the area while investigators examined shell casings and other evidence left at the scene.

SPS confirmed that this is not the first violent incident linked to the same business owner. In earlier cases, the owner’s residence was reportedly shot at on two separate occasions, raising concerns that the latest attack is part of an ongoing extortion campaign rather than an isolated act of vandalism or random violence.

The shooting adds to a growing pattern of extortion-related crimes in Surrey. Police data indicate that extortion cases in the city are now averaging more than one per day since the start of the year, with shootings occurring on an almost daily basis. Many of these incidents have targeted businesses, particularly those perceived to be financially successful.

Surrey Police say extortion investigations remain a top priority and are urging anyone with information, surveillance footage, or dashcam video from the area around the time of the shooting to come forward. Authorities continue to warn business owners not to engage with extortion demands and to report threats immediately, as the escalating violence poses a serious risk to public safety. The investigation into the Newton-area dealership shooting is ongoing.
