Chandigarh: A fresh debate has emerged in Punjab over government recruitment after concerns were raised that while political parties seek votes from Punjabis, a significant number of government jobs are reportedly being filled by candidates from outside the state. The issue has once again brought the focus back to employment opportunities for Punjab’s youth.
Critics argue that Punjab’s young people are facing increasing unemployment despite years of promises by successive governments to create jobs. Many educated youths continue to prepare for competitive examinations or seek employment outside Punjab and abroad due to limited opportunities at home.
The controversy has intensified demands for a transparent review of recruitment policies in state government departments. Those raising the issue say the state’s taxpayers fund Punjab’s public resources and that local youth should receive priority in employment wherever legally permissible. They argue that the government must formulate policies that encourage greater participation by Punjab’s youth in public-sector jobs while remaining consistent with constitutional and legal requirements.
