Chandigarh: Senior Congress leader and MLA Pargat Singh on Sunday questioned the Punjab government’s proposed amendments to the state’s anti-sacrilege law, while renewing the demand for justice in the 2015 sacrilege cases that continue to resonate across the state.
Addressing a press conference, Pargat Singh said that protecting the sanctity of religious scriptures is a matter of utmost importance, but stressed that any legislation must be constitutionally sound, legally enforceable, and capable of delivering justice. He argued that simply introducing stricter laws would not address the core issue unless the long-pending sacrilege cases are brought to their logical conclusion.
The Congress MLA criticized the government’s handling of the 2015 sacrilege investigations, alleging that despite repeated promises over the years, those responsible have not been brought to justice. He said the prolonged delay has deepened public disappointment and raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the investigative process.
Pargat Singh also expressed concerns over the proposed amendments, urging the government to ensure that the legislation is drafted after extensive consultation with legal experts, constitutional authorities, and representatives of religious institutions. Calling for accountability, the Congress leader maintained that justice for the victims and resolution of the 2015 sacrilege cases should remain the government’s highest priority.
