The controversy surrounding the farewell arrangements for former Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh (A.P. Singh), has sparked considerable discussion and anger among sections of the Punjabi diaspora. The cancellation of a traditional sporting event planned as part of his farewell programme has raised questions about why a sports facility could not be made available for an occasion honouring a senior military leader who had served the nation.
The issue goes beyond the cancellation of a sporting activity. For many people, a farewell to a decorated military chief is an occasion to recognise years of service, leadership and commitment. Consequently, any disruption to traditional farewell arrangements can become a matter of institutional protocol, public perception and respect for military leadership.According to media reports, the Air Force Sports Complex, situated on approximately 30 acres at Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi, was closed on October 28, 2026, following action by the Land and Development Office (L&DO), under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, to reclaim the land. The complex includes a golf course, swimming pool, gymnasium, restaurants and other sports facilities. The closure was part of a wider government drive to take back prominent government-land properties in Delhi, including the Delhi Race Club and Jaipur Polo Ground.
The closure directly affected the traditional golfing-out ceremony planned for Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh. This was not simply a private farewell party but a long-standing military tradition in which the outgoing Air Chief plays a farewell round of golf with fellow serving and retired officers. Reports described the cancellation as an unusual break with a decades-old tradition.
The controversy has also raised questions about the timing of the decision. Critics have argued that the authorities could have allowed the farewell event to take place before taking possession of the facility. Some veterans reportedly viewed the abrupt closure as an unnecessary slight to the outgoing Air Chief. However, there is no established evidence that the land-reclamation decision was intended to punish or disrespect A.P. Singh.
Among sections of the Punjabi diaspora, the episode has become a subject of concern because military service, honour and respect for the armed forces hold particular significance for many Punjabi families. Questions are being raised about whether administrative decisions should have been implemented in a way that avoided disrupting an important farewell tradition.
It is important to distinguish between the cancellation of the golf ceremony and the formal farewell arrangements. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hosted a farewell reception on October 26, where A.P. Singh and his wife were presented with a framed picture of the Golden Temple. The outgoing Air Chief also received a ceremonial guard of honour on October 31. Therefore, his formal military farewell did take place, even though the traditional golfing ceremony was cancelled.
The government may have the authority to reclaim land for public purposes, defence infrastructure or other administrative requirements. However, the manner and timing of implementing such decisions also matter. When an institution has served the armed forces for decades, its closure deserves careful planning, particularly when serving personnel, veterans, families and training facilities are affected.
Another issue requiring clarification is the future of the facilities used for Agniveer training and the welfare of serving and retired Air Force personnel. The closure has reportedly affected not only recreational activities but also employees and workers associated with the complex.
For the Punjabi diaspora, the central question is straightforward: could the authorities not have waited a few days so that a respected Air Chief could complete his traditional farewell in the customary manner?Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh completed 42 years of military service. His career and contribution to the Indian Air Force deserve recognition independently of political and administrative controversies.
Respect for military institutions should not become a casualty of administrative decisions. Equally, questions about the government’s intentions should be based on evidence rather than speculation.

Editorial clarification: The sports complex was closed because of the government’s land-reclamation action, not because an official order specifically prohibited a farewell party. The cancelled event was the traditional golfing-out ceremony. This distinction is important for an accurate news report.
