Budhlada Incident Raises Serious Questions About Police Accountability and Punjab’s Anti-Drug Campaign

The reported incident in Budhlada town of Mansa district has once again brought the issue of accountability within the police force into the spotlight. According to a social media post by journalist Neel Kamal (@NeelkamalPb), an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was allegedly caught by members of the public with a substance identified as Chitta (heroin). The incident has attracted considerable attention because it occurred while protests against the drug menace and the killing of anti-drug activist Parwinder Singh Jhota have been continuing in the area.

According to the journalist’s report, the protest in Mansa had continued for 18 days following the killing of Parwinder Singh Jhota. Mansa Police reportedly stated that an FIR was being registered against the ASI. The allegations against the officer require a transparent investigation so that the facts can be established and responsibility fixed under the law.

If the allegations are established through investigation, the case will raise serious questions about the conduct of an individual entrusted with enforcing the law. Police officers are expected to protect communities, investigate drug trafficking and prevent the spread of narcotics. Any allegation that an officer is personally involved in drug-related activity deserves an impartial investigation and accountability under the law.

Punjab has witnessed repeated public protests, political statements and official assurances about eliminating the drug menace. However, the people want more than slogans and announcements. They want effective action against drug suppliers, traffickers and anyone found abusing an official position to facilitate illegal activities. Accountability must apply equally to everyone, regardless of rank or influence.

The controversy surrounding Parwinder Singh Jhota’s death has already raised difficult questions about the treatment of people who openly campaign against drugs. His supporters have been demanding justice and answers. The latest incident in Budhlada has added another dimension to public concern about the credibility of the anti-drug campaign.

The term “black sheep” should not be used to condemn the entire police force. Thousands of police personnel perform their duties honestly and face difficult circumstances. However, those who violate the law must not be shielded simply because they wear a uniform. The law must apply equally to ordinary citizens and government officials.

Punjab cannot win its battle against narcotics without public trust. The government and police leadership must ensure impartial investigations, transparent proceedings and strict action wherever wrongdoing is established. The people of Punjab deserve answers, and the fight against drugs must begin with accountability at every level.
