Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh Resigns as Amritsar MLA, Calls for ‘Punjab First’ Politics

Amritsar: Former IPS officer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has announced his resignation from the Punjab Legislative Assembly, thanking the people of Amritsar for their support and calling for a new political direction focused on Punjab’s pressing challenges.

In a public message addressed to his constituents, Singh said he had resigned from his membership of the Punjab Assembly and would remain indebted to the people of Amritsar for the love and respect they had extended to him throughout his political journey.

Singh said he had completed nearly 90 per cent of the targets he had set as an MLA, clarifying that responsibilities falling under municipal councillors, the mayor and Members of Parliament were separate from his legislative role. He added that a detailed account of his work in different areas had already been made public through newspapers and his Facebook page.

Highlighting his approach to politics, Singh claimed that one of his major achievements was challenging the traditional “mai-baap” culture and treating the public as his principal source of inspiration. He said he had consistently raised the concerns of Amritsar residents in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, addressing issues ranging from drinking water and sewage systems to the Circuit House, Company Bagh, the open drain, Guru Nanak Dev University, Government Medical College and Sarup Rani College.

He also referred to his efforts to raise the Bargari sacrilege incident and said he had brought locality-specific issues into the Assembly, including concerns involving individual streets and neighbourhoods.

Calling for a broader political transformation, Singh said Punjab was facing serious challenges from drugs, extortion, gangsterism and corruption. He argued that the state’s future could not be secured through politics limited to street-level infrastructure projects and ribbon-cutting ceremonies, but required clean politics, transparent administration and honest governance.

Singh said his next political strategy would be developed in consultation with the people, with the objective of building a progressive Punjab. Reiterating his slogan of “Punjab First,” he said he had no personal agenda or self-interest beyond working for the state’s future.

His resignation marks a significant political development in Amritsar and is likely to prompt questions about his next course of action and the broader political implications for Punjab.

Note: The resignation announcement and claims regarding his legislative achievements are based on Singh’s public statement. The formal acceptance of his resignation and any subsequent political developments remain to be confirmed.
