Chandigarh-The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), through its Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal, has strongly condemned the disturbing allegations involving a Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector, who was reportedly captured on CCTV footage at the residence of Shiv Sena leader Mahant Kashmir Giri in Khanna, allegedly placing an object beneath a mattress before a subsequent police raid.
According to reports, the police later claimed to have recovered approximately 30 grams of heroin from the same location and arrested Giri. Following the circulation of the CCTV footage, Khanna SSP Darpan Ahluwalia reportedly suspended ASI Sukhdev Singh, constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter and discharged Mahant Kashmir Giri from the case.
Satnam Singh Chahal said that the allegations, if established, represent a deeply disturbing abuse of police authority and a serious violation of the principles of justice. “When those entrusted with enforcing the law are themselves accused of fabricating evidence or falsely implicating citizens, it becomes extremely difficult for ordinary people to maintain faith in the police system. This is precisely why public confidence in Punjab Police is steadily declining,” he said.
Chahal stressed that the credibility of law enforcement depends on impartiality, integrity and accountability. Any attempt to plant evidence, manipulate investigations or misuse police powers must be treated as a serious criminal and institutional matter, regardless of the rank or political connections of the individuals involved.
NAPA called for a fair, transparent and independent investigation into the incident, including scrutiny of the CCTV footage, the alleged recovery process and the role of every police personnel involved. The association said that accountability must extend beyond the suspended officer if the investigation establishes the involvement of others.
Chahal further said that Punjab cannot afford a situation in which citizens fear those who are supposed to protect them. The police must act as guardians of law and public safety, not as instruments of intimidation or injustice.
NAPA urged the Punjab government and senior police leadership to ensure that the investigation reaches its logical conclusion and that strict legal action is taken against anyone found guilty. Restoring public confidence in Punjab Police requires more than suspensions—it demands transparent investigations, institutional reforms and a firm commitment to the rule of law.
“Public faith in the police is built through justice and destroyed through abuse of authority. Punjab deserves a police force that protects every citizen and remains accountable to the law.”
