New Delhi: A controversy has erupted within sections of the Sikh community following allegations that BJP leader and Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa pressured gurdwara management bodies to deny student protesters access to Gurdwaras and to stop serving them langar during the ongoing demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The allegations have circulated widely on social media and in public statements by Sikh leaders, though Sirsa has not publicly responded to these specific claims.
Several Sikh organisations, activists, and community members have strongly condemned the reported move, arguing that the Sikh tradition of Guru Ka Langar and offering shelter to those in need is rooted in the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and should never be influenced by political considerations. During the Jantar Mantar protests, numerous Sikh volunteers and organisations have continued providing food, medical assistance, and refuge to students, reflecting the long-standing Sikh tradition of selfless service (sewa).
Critics say that if any attempt was made to prevent students from entering Gurdwaras or receiving langar, it would be contrary to the Sikh principles of equality, compassion, and service to humanity. They have emphasised that Gurdwaras have historically remained open to people of every faith, background, and political belief, particularly during times of hardship.
The controversy comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Jantar Mantar protests, where police action against student demonstrators has triggered widespread demonstrations and expressions of solidarity across Punjab, Haryana, and other parts of the country.
Community leaders have urged that Gurdwaras remain independent institutions dedicated to spiritual values and humanitarian service, free from political pressure. They have called for restraint, dialogue, and respect for Sikh religious traditions while encouraging all parties to resolve differences peacefully
