Toronto: A truck driver named Sukhwinder Sidhu has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a horrific road accident that killed an Olympic figure skater and injured several others.
Superior Court Justice Clayton Conlon made the ruling in Orangeville, Ontario, on Wednesday. Earlier, Sukhwinder Sidhu had pleaded guilty in February to charges of causing death and bodily harm by dangerous driving.
The accident occurred north of Toronto in August 2023, in which Alexandra Paul Olinandre Faul died. Her young son and several others were also injured during the accident.
The court was told that on August 23, 2023, Sidhu was driving a truck at a high rate of speed on County Road 124 in Melancton Township. This road is located between Orangeville and Collingwood.
It is alleged that the truck entered a construction zone and collided with parked vehicles. During the hearing in the court, it was told that the truck was travelling at a speed of about 107 kmph, while the speed limit in that construction zone was 60 kmph.
According to the facts, Sidhu had faced speeding challans several times in the past. At the time of the accident, he had been driving continuously for at least 16 hours and had been working for more than 24 hours.
The court also ordered that Sidhu will be banned from driving for seven years after completing his prison sentence.
