UK MP Preet Kaur Gill Backs Representation of the People Bill 2026 to Strengthen Electoral Transparency

Wolverhampton-UK MP Preet Kaur Gill has welcomed the Representation of the People Bill 2026, highlighting its proposed measures to strengthen democratic participation, improve transparency in political funding and protect the integrity of elections across the United Kingdom. Gill said she was proud to vote for the legislation, which aims to address emerging challenges facing the democratic process.

The Bill includes proposals to tighten rules on political donations to prevent foreign money and hostile actors from influencing UK elections, prohibit political donations made using cryptocurrency, and require companies making political contributions to demonstrate a genuine UK or Irish connection. It also seeks to improve transparency around political donations and campaign spending while addressing emerging concerns involving AI-generated election content and misinformation.

Another key provision is the proposal to extend voting rights to 16- and 17-year-olds, alongside modernising voter registration to make participation easier for eligible voters. The legislation also includes measures intended to strengthen protections for election candidates and electoral staff against harassment and intimidation. Gill said the proposed reforms would help safeguard elections, encourage wider democratic participation and support a fair, transparent and secure democratic system for future generations.

The Bill’s progress through Parliament and its final provisions will determine how these proposed changes are implemented. Further details are available through the official UK Parliament website: https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/4080.
