Amritsar: UK Member of Parliament Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has called for the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor, underlining the importance of the historic pilgrimage route for Sikhs across the world.Speaking in Amritsar, Dhesi said he had spoken with the President of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and requested that efforts be made towards opening the Kartarpur Corridor once again.
“I have talked with the President of the Gurdwara’s Committee and asked him about opening the Kartarpur Corridor once again,” Dhesi said.The Kartarpur Corridor provides Indian pilgrims visa-free access to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan, one of the most revered Sikh shrines associated with Guru Nanak Sahib. The corridor was inaugurated in November 2019 and has become an important religious link for Sikh devotees.
Dhesi also expressed gratitude to the Speaker for allowing him to raise issues concerning Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the Punjab Legislative Assembly in Chandigarh. He said the concerns of Punjabis living overseas require greater attention and continued engagement between governments and the diaspora.
The UK MP’s intervention comes at a time when the reopening of the Kartarpur pilgrimage route remains an important issue for Sikh devotees. His appeal for renewed access reflects the wider desire among the Sikh diaspora to maintain religious and cultural connections with historic Sikh shrines across the border.
Dhesi has consistently raised issues concerning the Sikh and Punjabi diaspora in political forums in the United Kingdom. His latest comments in Punjab place the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor and the concerns of NRIs prominently on the public agenda
